Maroc Télécom wins stake in Gabon Telecom

Maroc Télécom has been selected as the winner of the tender offer relating to the acquisition of a 51% stake in Gabon Télécom SA, the incumbent telecommunications operator of Gabon, for €61 million.

Mr Abdeslam Ahizoune, Chairman of Maroc Telecom Management Board, said: “We are happy that Maroc Telecom has been choosen as a strategic partner of Gabon Telecom. Without waiting, we are going to implement a restructuring and development plan that will help this operator to become a jewel of the Gabonese economy and a model for the region, able to offer the best services at the best prices to the population and to companies of this country.”

Gabon Telecom realised, with its mobile subsidiary Libertis, revenues of €137 million in 2006, according to Gabonese estimations. At the end of December 2006, the company has an estimated customer base of 250,000 mobile customers, representing a market share of almost 30%, and more than 30,000 fixed-line subscribers. At the end of 2006, the penetration rate was estimated at 53% for mobile services and 2% for fixed-line services.

Maroc Telecom is Morocco's incumbent telecommunications operator. Its main shareholders are Vivendi Universal (51%) and the Kingdom of Morocco (34%). Maroc Telecom is the majority shareholder of Mauritel, the Mauritanian telecommunications operator, and Onatel in Burkina Faso.
