Alcatel is a worldwide provider of a variety of telecommunication equipment and services, with operations in more than 130 countries. Alcatel's telecommunications equipment and services enable its customers to send or receive virtually any type of voice or data transmission. The company's customers include fixed line and wireless telecommunications operators, Internet service providers (ISPs), governments, and businesses.

Alcatel, originally publicly owned, was established in 1898. Later, Alcatel NV was formed in 1986 through the merger of the European telecommunications business of ITT Corporation and the French Compagnie Générale d’Électricité (CGE). In 1991, CGE was renamed Alcatel Alsthom and subsequently in 1998, Alcatel Alsthom changed its name to Alcatel.


Alcatel is listed principally on the Paris and New York Stock Exchanges. As of December 2005, the shareholder structure of Alcatel stood at: Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (4.12%), Employee Investment Fund (FCP 3A) (1.89%), Société Générale Group (0.75%), Shares held by Alcatel subsidiaries (1.77%), Treasury Stock (2.35%), and Public (89.12%, including shares owned by Brandes Investment Partners LP).
