Company Reports are concise reports that provide a review of the company's activities, corporate strategy and recent developments.
JDSU is a provider of communications test and measurement solutions and optical products for telecommunications service providers, cable operators, and network equipment manufacturers. The company also provides optical solutions for medical/environmental instrumentation, semiconductor processing, display, brand authentication, aerospace, and defence, and decorative applications. JDSU was formed as the result of a merger between Uniphase Corporation and JDS FITEL Inc, which combined their operations on June 30, 1999. During 2005, JDSU acquired Lightwave Electronics Corporation (a provider of lasers for commercial markets including materials processing, semiconductor fabrication, and biotech), Photonic Power Systems Inc (a provider of photonic power for the delivery of power over fibre), Acterna Inc (a provider of broadband and optical test and measurement solutions for telecommunications and cable service providers and network equipment manufacturers), and Agility Communications Inc (a provider of tunable laser solutions for optical networks). JDSU also announced some divestments during 2005, including the sale of its analogue cable TV and radio frequency (RF) over fibre specialty businesses to Emcore Corporation, and its passive Q-switched microlaser product line and Grenoble, France, facility to Teem Photonics. In September 2005, JDSU announced its new corporate identity and shortened its name from “JDS Uniphase” to “JDSU". This did not affect the company’s legal identity, which remains JDS Uniphase Corporation, but is designed to communicate the company’s commitment to enabling customer innovation in broadband and optical markets. JDSU common shares are traded on the Nasdaq stock exchange. JDSU exchangeable shares are traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange. In addition, JDSU convertible notes are eligible for trading on the PORTAL market.
