Cable & Wireless (C&W) is an international communications company that operates through two standalone business units - International and UK.

The International business unit operates integrated telecommunications companies in 34 countries, through 25 subsidiaries and nine joint ventures and associates, on five continents across the world. These companies offer mobile, broadband, domestic and international fixed-line services to residential and business customers. The principal businesses are in the Caribbean, Panama, Macau, Monaco and Islands (Islands comprises operations in the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, the Middle East and the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans).

The UK business unit provides enterprise and carrier solutions to the largest users of telecommunications services across the UK, the US, continental Europe and Asia, and wholesale broadband services in the UK through Cable & Wireless Access (formerly Bulldog).

Based in the UK, C&W was established in the 1860s and grew to become one of the world's leading international communications companies. The first transatlantic cable was installed for the British colonies under the group name of Eastern Telegraph Company (ETC). Later, in 1929, the company merged with Marconi Company and from 1934 the combined organisation was called Cable & Wireless Ltd. Following a disastrous period for the company, C&W announced a major restructuring in November 2002. In June 2003, the company was re-organised with a geographical and customer focus and the global and regional distinction was eliminated.

The principal trading market for C&W's ordinary shares is the London Stock Exchange. At May 31, 2006, the company had 119,756 shareholders of record. On December 13, 2005, C&W terminated its ADR programme and delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.
