China Mobile Ltd operates mobile networks in all the 31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions of China and, through the network of China Mobile Peoples Telephone Company Ltd, reaches a substantial part of Hong Kong.

China Mobile provides mobile telecommunication services primarily through the GSM platform, and also provides voice and data services, including wireless data and Internet access. The company is the leading mobile services provider in mainland China and boasts the world’s largest unified, contiguous all-digital mobile network and the world’s largest mobile subscriber base (a total of 332.378 million as of June 30, 2007).

China Mobile Ltd was incorporated in Hong Kong on September 3, 1997, as a limited liability company under the name China Telecom (Hong Kong) Limited, and was listed on the Hong Kong and New York Stock Exchanges in October 1997. The company then changed its name to China Mobile (Hong Kong) Limited on June 28, 2000, and finally to China Mobile Ltd on May 29, 2006.

As of May 31, 2007, China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC), a state-owned company incorporated in China, held a 74.46% equity interest in China Mobile Ltd through intermediate holding companies. Meanwhile, UK-based Vodafone Group also held approximately 3.21% of China Mobile Ltd's outstanding shares, as a result of a strategic alliance between the two companies (see the main Corporate Structure section for further details).
