Emirates Telecommunications Corp (Etisalat)

Company Reports are concise reports that provide a review of the company's activities, corporate strategy and recent developments.
Published: September 2007
Pages: 44

The Emirates Telecommunications Corporation Group comprises the holding company, Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat), and its subsidiaries. The principal activity of the group is to provide telecommunications and media services, and related equipment, including the provision of related contracting and consultancy services to international telecommunications companies and consortia. These activities are carried out through Etisalat, its subsidiaries, joint ventures, and associated companies.

Internally, Etisalat is structured into three independent units: Etisalat UAE, which provides full telecommunications, Internet, and cable TV services within the UAE; Etisalat International, which is responsible for all international investments and the pursuit of new opportunities in the global market; and, Etisalat Services, which holds Etisalat’s non-basic telecommunications units, such as its e-marine division, which installs and maintains submarine cable in the Persian Gulf region.

Etisalat holds a full service licence from the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), which is valid until 2025. The company operated as a monopoly until May 2006, when the TRA granted a second telecommunications licence to Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC), giving it the right to operate mobile and fixed-line services across the country.

Etisalat continues to seek new investment opportunities internationally in order to sustain growth, with the telecommunications market reaching saturation point in the UAE. The company now has significant investments in countries such as Afghanistan (Etisalat Afghanistan), Africa (Atlantique Telecom), Egypt (Etisalat Misr), Pakistan (Pakistan Telecommunications Company Ltd), Saudi Arabia (Etihad Etisalat Company), Sudan (Canar Telecommunications), and Tanzania (Zanzibar Telecom (Zantel)).

Etisalat was established in 1976 to bring together the disparate telecommunications networks of the seven emirates that make up the UAE, and is majority-owned by the Ministry of Communications (60%), with the remaining shares publicly-traded on the national stock exchange and held by UAE nationals.
