With significant operations in Singapore and Australia (through wholly-owned subsidiary SingTel Optus), the SingTel group provides a portfolio of services that include voice and data services over fixed, wireless and Internet platforms.

SingTel also operates a pan-Asian chain of data centres, providing a suite of managed hosting telco solutions branded EXPAN. Data centres are located in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore. Through marketing alliances, EXPAN is also available in eight other markets including China and India.

The SingTel group's other major investments in the Asia Pacific region include Advanced Info Service (AIS) (Thailand), the Bharti Telecom Group (India), Globe Telecom (Philippines), Pacific Bangladesh Telecom (Bangladesh), and Telkomsel (Indonesia). Singapore Telecom’s history dates back to the 1940s when the British government established the Telephone Department of Singapore in 1946. During 1974, Singapore Telephone Board and the Telecommunications Authority of Singapore (TAS) merged and formed Singapore Telecom, but retained the name TAS. Eighteen years later, Singapore Telecom was corporatised as a fully-owned government company and was named as SingTel, or Singapore Telecommunications Pte Ltd.

As of March 2006, Temasek Holdings controlled 56.6% of the SingTel group. The remaining shares are free float.
