SingTel Optus is Australia's second-largest telecommunications operator, serving a customer base of over six million. The company offers a broad range of communications services including mobile, local, national and long-distance telephony, business network services, Internet and satellite services and subscription television. Optus was formed in 1991 to bid for AUSSAT, the Australian national satellite carrier. At that time, Optus was 51%-owned by Optus Proprietary Ltd, 24.5% by BellSouth, and 24.5% by Cable & Wireless Plc (C&W). In July 1997, C&W acquired the controlling stake in Optus after acquiring BellSouth's interest. In August 1998, Optus was re-named C&W Optus Pty Ltd. In 2001, C&W began accepting bids for part or all of C&W Optus, and in September 2001 Singapore Telecom (SingTel) received approval from the Australian authorities for its acquisition of C&W Optus in a deal valued at approximately US$9,000 million. In October 2001, the company became wholly-owned by SingTel and became known as SingTel Optus. On July 1, 2005, Optus realigned its business structure into four divisions: Optus Consumer, Optus Small and Medium Businesses (SMB); Optus Business; and, Optus Wholesale & Satellite. The realignment is aimed at leveraging the opportunities in the new era of telecommunications convergence. Prior to the restructuring, Optus operated through five business areas - Mobile, Business, Small Business, Wholesale, and Consumer & Multimedia.
