Swisscom is the state-controlled incumbent fixed-line and mobile communications operator of Switzerland, offering a comprehensive range of products and services to residential and business customers. As the leading provider of fixed-line services, Swisscom offers analogue and digital access services, as well as broadband services over existing subscriber lines using ADSL technology.

Through Swisscom Mobile, in which Vodafone holds a 25% stake, Swisscom is the leading mobile telecommunications service provider in Switzerland. Swisscom also offers a range of data services, from leased-lines to integrated solutions for its business customers.

Swisscom AG was established in its present form on January 1, 1998, following a separation of the state-owned postal and telecommunications businesses into autonomous operations. This transformation coincided with the liberalisation of the Swiss telecommunications market during the beginning of 1998, which saw the first true alternative network operators begin to compete with Swisscom.

Swisscom shares are listed on two stock exchanges: the SWX in Zurich and the NYSE in New York. Trading on the NYSE is in the form of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). As of September 15, 2006, Swisscom's shares were held by the Swiss Confederation (58.41%), Swisscom Treasury Stock (8.67%), and other shareholders (32.92%).
