Telefónica de Argentina SA (TASA) is primarily a wireline provider of local, domestic long-distance and international telecommunications services, as well as Internet services. Until the introduction of competition in October 1999, TASA operated solely in the southern part of Argentina and the Buenos Aires metropolitan area (AMBA), with the largest share of the business district, almost all of Buenos Aires province, and eight further provinces. Since October 1999, the company has been permitted to offer services in the northern half of the country and the remainder of the AMBA. As of March 2006, Compania Internacional de Telecomunicaciones SA (Cointel) owned a 64.83% equity interest in TASA through its holding of all of the Class A shares, representing 62.53% of capital stock, and 40.2 million Class B shares representing 2.3% of the capital stock. Cointel is owned by three affiliates of the Spanish operator Telefónica SA that collectively own the entire capital stock of Cointel. These three affiliates are Telefónica International Holding BV (TIHBV, with a 37.3258% interest), Telefónica Holding de Argentina SA (Holding, with a 50% interest), and Telefónica Internacional SA (TISA, with a 12.6742% interest). In addition, as of March 2006, TISA owned a 32.25% equity interest in TASA represented by Class B shares and TIHBV held Class B shares representing a 0.95% equity interest. Class B shares representing an aggregate 1.96% interest in the company were held by minority shareholders and are listed on several Argentine exchanges and the New York Stock Exchange.
