TeliaSonera AB is the leading telecommunications company in the Nordic and Baltic region, with strong positions within mobile communications in the fast growing markets in Eurasia. Outside the Nordic and Baltic region, TeliaSonera offers mobile services in Spain, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Moldova and, through associated companies, in Russia and Turkey. In July 2007, TeliaSonera expanded its operations in Eurasia with the acquisition of MCT Corp's operations in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Additionally, the company’s International Carrier business provides international capacity, voice, and IP services across the Atlantic and Europe on a wholesale basis. TeliaSonera was created in December 2002 through the merger of the incumbent telecommunications operators in Sweden and Finland, Telia AB and Sonera Oy. TeliaSonera's shares are listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange and on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. As of June 30, 2007, the largest shareholders of TeliaSonera were the Swedish and Finnish governments with stakes of 37.3% and 13.7%, respectively.
