Vimpel Communications (VimpelCom) is a provider of wireless telecommunications services in Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. As of September 2006, the VimpelCom Group's cellular licence portfolio covered a territory with a population of approximately 237 million people. Geographically, it covered 78 regions of Russia (136.5 million people, representing 94% of Russia's population) and the entire territory of Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Georgia. As of September 2006, VimpelCom had a total subscriber base exceeding 50 million. In 1996, VimpelCom became the first Russian company to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Norway's Telenor ASA holds a 27% stake in VimpelCom, while Russia's Alfa Group owns a 33% stake.
