National Mobile Telecommunications Company KSC (trading as Wataniya Telecom) was commercially launched in December 1999 by its principal shareholder, Kuwait Projects Company (KIPCO). As the second licensed cellular operator in Kuwait, the company has built out a nationwide digital cellular telephone network in that country and has expanded into the cellular markets in Algeria, Iraq, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia. At the end of 2005 (latest data), the company served nearly 6.4 million customers in markets with a combined population of more than 92 million.
